Waste Management & Landfills

Tāhunanui Back Beach Contamination Remediation

Client:
Nelson City Council
Date:
2024

In the 1960s, sawdust material from a local timber mill was used as fill for the raised car park at Tāhunanui’s back beach. Over time, erosion left this material exposed, making it an environmental and a health and safety risk to users of this popular recreation area in Nelson.

We collaborated with the client and designers to produce a carefully considered process to remove and transfer the contaminated waste to York Valley Landfill cost-effectively. This included accurate excavation and removal of waste; a real-time testing regime; and maximising cartage resources by blending materials of varying densities to reduce truck movements and ensure full loads. Sand was imported from other areas to reinstate the sand dunes prior to planting. The project also involved extensive lizard relocation.

Procurement documentation was specifically tailored to maximise contractor opportunity and minimise client risk. We followed this with real-time commercial management of the construction phase alongside the contractor to avoid financial escalation. Through this approach, the project was completed under bridge and $750,000k under the original Engineer’s estimate.
